Sequential Logic: D Flip-Flops and J/K Flip-Flops
Flip-Flop gate- a circuit that has two stable states and can be used to store state information
Types of Flip Flops:
Types of Flip Flops:
- D Flip Flop- captures the value of the D-input at a definite portion of the clock cycle
- J/K Flip Flop-

Asynchronous Counters: Small Scale Integration
Asynchronous counters:
- Only the first flip-flop is clocked by an external clock
- Asynchronous counters are slower than synchronous counters
- Asynchronous counters are also called ripple counters because of the way the clock pulses
Synchronous Counters: Small Scale Integration
Synchronous counters:
- All flip-flops are simultaneously clocked by an external clock
- Synchronous counters are faster than asynchronous counters
- Synchronous counters do not suffer from the ripple effect
- Synchronous counters require more logic than asynchronous counters
